E-mail content: MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions)
- SMTP, the mail transfer protocol, is restricted to ASCII 7 bits data (and short lines)
- other types of data: pictures, sounds, binary documents like Excel spreadsheets are transferred as attached document
- MIME is a conventional way to describe these documents: the type (text, image, application,…) and the way used to encode them in 7 bits data (usually Base-64: 3 bytes coded into 4 bytes, 4*6bits)
