E-mail addresses: they have the format: user@address
- user can be a true name e.g. Steve.Jobs or a generic one e.g. user.support. Handling of these names is done by the MTA.
- address can be the Internet name of a computer, as known by the DNS (remember, the Name Server), or an organization name like ipnl.in2p3.fr (no computer has this address in the Internet!). All these address are handled by special entries in the DNS, the MX: Mail eXchanger.
