LAN: Ethernet versus FDDI

• Ethernet

  • cheap
  • high speed: 10, 100, 1000 Mbits/s
  • prone to network partitioning
  • stochastic behavior when heavily loaded

• FDDI

  • expensive
  • not so high speed
  • fault tolerant: unavoidable in some applications!
  • can provide synchronous services (guaranteed bandwidth)
